I'm sure almost all of you have heard of US Airways flight 1549 making an emergency landing into the Hudson River on Thursday, read vivid accounts of passengers aboard the plane as well as seen footage of the rescue and recovery efforts after the fact. I know for one, I tried to YouTube the actual plane's descent, thinking SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE had whipped out his cell phone or camera and recorded the actual descent.
To my surprise, there was none. Needless to say, I gave up after a while, thinking it was just one of those things. But - video footage has finally surfaced, albeit a little grainy and distant, but hey, what did you expect - full 1080p high def with panoramic view?
The video below shows flight 1549 coming in from the far left with a big splash. Some 40 seconds into the footage, the camera zooms in and you can see passengers and life rafts outside of the plane. We have all heard of the super fast rescue efforts of the various boats that came to help, but this is just amazing. At about 1:45 the camera zooms in on a vessel speeding towards the hapless passengers - it arrives onsite at 3:45 - hardly 4 minutes after the plane actually hit the water. Kudos to Captain C.B. "Sully" Sullenburger for terrific crisis management and to all the people who participated in the rescue effort.
At least this is one shining star in the midst of our current bleak economic times.
